With sports beginning to return to action many sports fans are preparing to support their favorite teams under a different set of circumstances. These seasons are going to look a lot different from what we are used to, that’s for sure.
But should sports be returning at all?
To me, this is a difficult question to answer. I understand wanting to distract the public from the dangers of the Coronavirus and everything that came with the pandemic’s havoc wreaking on the U.S.
But let’s look at where the NBA is planning their restart. Florida is one of the many states within the country that has seen massive spikes in their positive COVID-19 cases, and the plan is to go ahead with the restart regardless.
Look, I want nothing more than to root for my favorite teams when they restart towards the end of July. However, we need to look at the possible outcomes of this.
I am not talking about the athletes potentially contracting the virus. I am talking about how this is all going to affect you.
Think about it. How many people do you see right now walking around without masks on? How many people are not social distancing? How many people are acting like there is nothing going on right now?
With sports restarting, even with no fans in attendance, it will be sending the wrong message to a country that has yet to control the pandemic at any level.
“But Jay, haven’t other countries started reopening and restarting sports?” I hear you ask. The answer is yes, but those countries don’t have a president who refuses to wear a mask. They aren’t led by someone who thinks that 99% of the cases we have seen are, “Totally harmless.”
This isn’t going to be the blog post where I slam the president for his response to COVID-19. This is where I am going to express my concern for the country at large.
If sports resume play when the country at large hasn’t begun to control the virus more people are going to go around like nothing is wrong and that everything is getting back to normal. This reaction will put more and more people at risk.
We need to get our shit together.
Of course I want to watch Pete Alonso crush home runs and lead the New York Mets to victory on my television. Of course I want to watch MLS, NBA, and any other sports to distract myself from what is going on in our world.
But before we earn that kind of distraction we need to take real action and do our part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.
Craft Beer on Tap: Liquid Truth Serum (Dogfish Head)
This beer is something else. If you know me, you know I love a bitter tasting beer. But this beer does bitter taste the right way. It is bitter but incredibly juicy bursting with the flavors of four different hops. The can reads, "Four different hop additions added in the whirlpool make this beer truthfully hoppy without being deceptively bitter. Juicy and unfiltered." Grab yourself a six-pack of these and enjoy!
